How to play Towerdle

Towerdle gives you six tries to name one tall structure. Three of its columns behave the way you expect from a guessing game; the height column compares your guess with the answer in exact metres and tells you only which way to move.

You get 6 guesses. Each one is scored against 4 columns - Country, Height, Floors and Completed - and the scoring is the whole game: you are narrowing a field rather than naming it cold.

Country is exact or nothing: the cell turns green when your guess holds the same value as the answer, and stays blank when it does not. Height, Floors and Completed are numbers, and an arrow points from your guess towards the answer, so a wrong number still tells you which way to go. Height in m.

A column the source leaves blank is marked as having no data rather than scored. It cannot come back green for anyone, on any guess, which means an unrecorded value is never a lucky hit - and the gap itself is a fact about the record, so the grid shows it instead of hiding it.

How a round goes

You start with an empty grid and a search box that holds all 526 structures in the pool. Name any of them and the row fills in with that structure's country, height, floor count and completion decade, each cell scored against the day's answer. You get six guesses, and then the reveal arrives whether you found it or not.

Every structure in the pool is a genuinely tall one, so even a wild opening guess buys real information. Most rounds go the same way: name something you know well, read the four cells as a bearing, and close the gap from two directions at once.

What the four columns tell you

Country matches or it does not. Floors and the completion decade are compared as numbers, with an arrow pointing towards the answer. Height is that same mechanic taken seriously: the cell shows the exact height of the structure you guessed, in metres, and the arrow says whether the answer stands taller or shorter.

The size of the gap is deliberately never sent to your browser, only its direction, because one guess plus a subtraction would otherwise hand you the answer's height outright. Where the record carries no floor count or no completion date the cell reads unknown, and an unknown never scores as a match for either side.

Where the numbers come from

Names, countries, heights, floor counts, completion dates, cities and architects come from Wikidata under CC0 1.0, frozen into the game rather than fetched while you play. A height is taken from the highest-ranked height statement on the record, in metres.

The calendar is 526 days long and uses each structure exactly once, so no answer ever repeats. It is also one long ramp: it opens with the towers that the most language editions of Wikipedia cover and works steadily towards the ones almost none do, so the puzzles get harder as the months pass.

What you end up knowing

When the round ends the game shows the verbatim English Wikipedia extract for the answer under CC BY-SA 4.0, with a link to the article and sourced facts such as the architect. After that come up to four bonus rounds, all of them about other structures in the set rather than the day's answer: which of two is taller, which city one stands in, which decade one was finished, which has more floors.

Play it for a while and you acquire a rough sense of scale that is hard to get any other way. Six hundred metres stops being an abstraction, and you start recognising which decades and which countries were putting up the tall things.

Where the data comes from

Towerdle is built on one openly licensed dataset, frozen into the game before it goes out. The licence is named next to each one above, and the same list, with the per-record detail, is on the Towerdle attribution page.

The writing you get on the reveal is english Wikipedia verbatim extract, CC BY-SA 4.0. It is quoted or generated from the source, never written by a language model while you play, and it carries its own credit and licence line wherever it appears.

The pool holds 526 entries and the calendar already runs 526 days, one answer a day, no repeats. That sequence was built offline before release and ships inside the game, so it is the same for everyone and nobody can read tomorrow out of the page. The day rolls over at midnight UTC.

Nothing is lost when a day ends. Every puzzle that has already run stays playable in the archive, and its answer, with the same reading you would have got by finishing it, is published the day after it ran.

Is it the same puzzle for everyone?
Yes. One puzzle a day, identical for every player, rolling over at midnight UTC. The sequence is a fixed calendar built before release, not a random draw, so the answer for tomorrow is not sitting in today's page.
Do I have to type a height?
No. You only ever name a structure. The grid does the comparing for you and reports the exact height of whatever you guessed, plus an arrow towards the answer.
Do I need an account?
No. There is nothing to sign up for. Your streak and stats live in your own browser's local storage, and the cookies page has a control to export that record to a file if you want to move it to another browser.
